What she does not do well is work with others. She’s used to carrying burdens, taking care of her little sister, taking care of her mother, pretending everything is okay. Her daddy died when she was little, her mother lost her legs to diabetes, and now she lives with her aunt and uncle, who send her to a fancy prep school where she doesn’t fit in. Patina Jones has experienced her share of sorrow in life. There are too many loose ends and the book ends up feeling incomplete. However, while Patina is an engaging story with an engaging heroine, the book never does quite live up to its predecessor. Jason Reynolds, in short, had a lot of expectations to meet when he wrote this sequel. Patina is the follow-up to Ghost, a National Book Award finalist. So how can she run relay and truly be part of a team? But Patty is used to being the one in charge, the one who carries everything. She runs to get rid of the mad she feels at school, where she doesn’t fit in with all the posh girls. Patina “Patty” Jones runs for her mother, whose legs were taken by the sugar.
